The man who saves Stephen Hawking's voice

Sam Blackburn has been responsible for the technology which allows Stephen Hawking to communicate for the past five years. Now he's moving on. The challenge for his successor: to keep that well-known voice in working order

You have been Stephen Hawking's technician since 2006. What was top of your to-do list when you started work?

At first the system was breaking all the time. I'd get calls at 1 o'clock in the morning saying "Stephen can't speak, what do we do?" So I needed to modernise the system. One of the first pieces I improved was the infrared sensor mounted on Stephen's cheek. That kind of incremental improvement is much easier for him to accept than a radical new system, because the learning curve associated with that is very steep. Stephen wouldn't be able to ask for help because the very thing he wouldn't be able to use would be the speech system. Understandably that has made him very reluctant to upgrade.

Stephen's voice is very distinctive, but you say there might be a problem retaining it?

I guess the most interesting thing in my office is a little grey box, which contains the only copy we have of Stephen's hardware voice synthesiser. The card inside dates back to the 1980s and this particular one contains Stephen's voice. There's a processor on it which has a unique program that turns text into speech that sounds like Stephen's, and we have only two of these cards. The company that made them went bankrupt and nobody knows how it works any more. I am trying to reverse engineer it, which is quite tricky.

Can't you update it with a new synthesiser?

No. It has to sound exactly the same. The voice is one of the unique things that defines Stephen in my opinion. He could easily change to a voice that was clearer, perhaps more soothing to listen to?? less robotic sounding?? but it wouldn't be Stephen's voice any more.

How exactly does Stephen communicate?

He has used a menu controlled by a computer system to speak since about 1986. Basically, a computer highlights cells in a big grid of letters or words, and when the correct one is highlighted the user presses a switch of some sort. When he became unable to move his hands sufficiently to use the switch, he moved to an infrared system mounted on his glasses, which detects movement in his cheek muscle.

What's going to happen when Stephen can no longer use the muscles in his cheek?

Stephen has motor neurone disease, which causes a progressive decay of the nerves, and now his facial muscles are the only ones he can control reasonably well. Those are now fading too, unfortunately. This has always been known, but Stephen has outlived all the estimates for the stages of his nerve decay.

The result is that the system has now become very slow. Stephen's rate of speech is down to about one word per minute, and while I am making slight advances in the technology he is using, the nerve decay has now reached the point where we need to move to some new technology. We have tried some eye-tracking systems; the other method is brain scanning, and there are all sorts of techniques for that. So far we have only considered those that don't require intervention?? no surgery certainly, and no shaving of the head.

Is he excited about the prospect of using such cutting-edge technologies to communicate better?

I find it exciting. Stephen has a stubborn attitude towards this sort of thing. He feels that he has to prove he can still use his existing system. The result is that when there is a communications expert in the room?? someone trying to show him new technology?? his speed using the existing system suddenly increases.

Syria pulls tanks from streets of restive city (AP)

BEIRUT ? After days of punishing assaults, Syria's army began withdrawing tanks from the restive city of Homs on Tuesday just as a team of Arab League observers was on its way to the central city, according to activists and an Arab official.

Opposition activist Mohammed Saleh said the heavy bombardment of Homs stopped Tuesday morning and tanks were seen pulling out of the streets. Another Homs-based activist said he saw armored vehicles leaving early Tuesday on a highway leading to the city of Palmyra to the east. He asked that his name not be made public for fear of retribution.

For days, military forces had pounded Homs with artillery despite agreeing to an Arab League plan to stop the bloodshed. The Arab monitoring mission is meant to ensure the government complies with the deal to halt the nine-month crackdown on dissent.

Opponents of President Bashar Assad, however, doubt that the Arab League can budge the autocratic leader at the head of one of the Middle East's most repressive regimes.

Syria's top opposition leader Burhan Ghalioun called Sunday for the League to bring the U.N. Security Council into the effort. The U.N. says more than 5,000 people have been killed since March in the political violence.

In Cairo, an official at the Arab League's operations room said the Sudanese head of the mission to Syria, Gen. Mohamed Ahmed Mustafa al-Dabi, was leading a team of at least 12 observers on their way to Homs Tuesday. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to journalists, gave no further details.

Homs, Syria's third largest city, has a population of 800,000 and is at the epicenter of the revolt against Assad, located about 100 miles (160 kilometers) north of the capital, Damascus. Many Syrians refer to Homs as the "Capital of the Revolution."

On Monday, security forces killed at least 42 people, most of them in Homs.

"Today is calm, unlike pervious days," Saleh said on Tuesday. "The shelling went on for days, but yesterday was terrible."

The Arab League plan agreed to by Assad last week requires the government to remove its security forces and heavy weapons from city streets, start talks with opposition leaders and allow human rights workers and journalists into the country. Before Tuesday's redeployment of at least some tanks, there had been no sign that Assad was implementing any of the terms, much less letting up on his brutal crackdown.

Get to Know One of Disc Golf's Best: Nikko Locastro

Nikko Locastro is one of the best disc golf players in the world, and he's currently up for the 2011 "Player of the Year" award, along with David Feldberg, Nate Doss, Paul Ulibarri, Paul McBeth, Will Schusterick and Josh Anthon.

He's had a great year, and hopes to make 2012 even better. On a recent blog posting, Locastro said he's been gearing up for next year, and in the off season he's been working on his custom designs, practicing and working out. He's been involved in creating a full range of NLDG (Nikko Locastro Disc Golf) custom art on discs, and has over 25 designs that are "in the works." His site already has some amazing custom designed t-shirts for sale as well.

Locastro said he has plans to really try and spread the word about disc golf, and hopes to do a lot more demonstrating. He comments, "I love the feeling of helping someone make improvements. This is something that I will do a lot more in the future." He also stated that, "Disc Golf is on an up rise and will continue to grow." I couldn't agree more, and Locastro's talents are a big part of it.

Locastro says in regard to the upcoming year, "I know with a good work ethic and routine I can continue to develop skills on and off the disc golf course. I do not want to look back in 2013 thinking I should have worked harder." Somehow I have a feeling that won't happen.

This year, he's played in 33 tournaments throughout the U.S. as well as internationally, and he's been the winner in 16 of them. That's a pretty amazing feat, and he's just 23 years old. Nikko's been playing disc golf for eight years, and has made big strides during that time.

In 2004, he placed fifth in the under 16 boys division at the Wisconsin Junior Championships, and had a seventh place finish in the advanced division at the Gateway Open four months later in his hometown of St. Louis, Missouri. The following year, Locastro was the advanced division winner at the St. Louis Spring Sizzler and had a fifth place finish in the same division at the St. Louis Open. He was victorious in that event in 2006.

2006 was also the year Locastro began competing in the open division, and he was the winner of both the Capital City Challenge and the Let's Do It Again. 2007 and 2008 saw him accomplish even more, and he took home more victories in the open division, including the Illinois Open in September 2008.

Locastro really took off in 2009, winning the United States Disc Golf Championship, the National Tour Series and much more. In 2010, he won the Japan Open, the Stockholm Disc Golf Open in Sweden and the Vibram Open, among many others. At the World Championships, he had an impressive sixth place finish.

Each year has continued to see Locastro become even more successful. Just some of his wins in 2011 include the National Tour Series, the Stockholm Open, the Texas State Disc Golf Championships and the Veterans Park Open. He had an impressive fourth place finish at the Professional Disc Golf World Championships this summer as well.

The odds are, he will accomplish even more in 2012. Congratulations to Nikko Locastro and the excellent job on making a great sport that much better.

The first time K.C. Dermody played disc golf was in the spectacular Black Hills of South Dakota. Ryan Dunn's Death Shocked Us All In 2011

'Jackass' star's death is our #7 Newsmaker of the year, proving fans appreciated the bearded daredevil as much as we did.
By Gil Kaufman

A lot of people view their co-workers as being a kind of extended family. Here at MTV, though, the madmen of "Jackass" really are part of our gang. They've taken over our studios, filled our prime time with outrageous spin-off programs and used their original half-hour show as a launchpad to worldwide fame.

So it was with an especially heavy heart that we reported on "Jackass" star Ryan Dunn's death in a high-speed car crash in June. His untimely passing is #7 on MTV News' Top Newsmakers of 2011 list, indicating the world seemed to share in our appreciation for Bam Margera's bearded best pal.

Dunn, 34, the go-to guy for outrageous stunts that even such stalwarts as Steve O weren't willing to try, died while bombing down the highway in his sports car near his Pennsylvania home after a night of drinks with friends.

Not only did many of our readers write in with fond remembrances of Dunn, but pals Johnny Knoxville and Jeff Tremaine shared their grief, along with everyone from motocross racer Carey Hart to the MTV brass.

With his kind, soft eyes and up-for-anything attitude, Dunn was described by many of his co-stars and cohorts as the kind of guy who would do anything for a friend. Many of you shared your stories of meeting him and confirmed that he was a person who loved life and brought a little bit of joy to everyone he met. As always, we tried to paint a deeper picture than the one you may have gotten from the mainstream press.

When we sent a reporter to Dunn's hometown of West Chester, we spoke to some of his neighbors and those gathered at a makeshift highway memorial. They too spoke of a kind-hearted soul who always remembered everyone he met and, well, just seemed like a good dude who really appreciated the life his fans had allowed him to live.

And yes, once the details about his death, along with that of passenger Zachary Hartwell, came to light, they served as a cautionary tale about the dangers of drinking and driving. Police determined that Dunn, a notorious speed demon, was driving his 2007 Porsche between 132 and 140 mph in a 55 mph zone and that his blood alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit in Pennsylvania.

A recent MTV special gave a loving overview of Dunn's life, told through his many TV appearances and the memories of his co-stars and friends, following his career from his early years in Ohio to some never-before-seen clips from "Viva La Bam" and "Jackass."

His friends said Dunn liked to marvel at the kind of life he was able to lead thanks to his willingness to dive into pools of poo and ride BMX bikes off roofs. And though we will miss him, he left behind the best legacy we could ask for: laughter and joy.

MTV continues our Best of 2011 coverage by looking back at the biggest pop-culture stories of the year. As we count down the newsmakers that mattered to you most, also check out our Best Artists, Best Songs, Best MTV Live Performances and Best EDM Artists of 2011.

Heavy D's Cause Of Death Announced

Rapper succumbed to pulmonary embolism, a result of a blood clot that traveled to his lung.
By Rob Markman

Though he was only 44 years old, a medical examiner has concluded that Heavy D's death last month was a result of natural causes. TMZ reported that Heavy, born Dwight Myers, died from a pulmonary embolism caused by deep vein thrombosis.

Pulmonary embolism is usually caused by a blood clot formed in the leg that eventually travels up to the lung, stopping blood flow. In most cases, the clots formed aren't deadly, but officials from L.A. County Coroner's Office also told TMZ that the rapper suffered from heart disease and that may have been a contributing factor to his death as well.

According to WebMD, common symptoms associated with pulmonary embolism are sudden shortness of breath, sharp chest pains, lightheadedness and fainting. Police reported that on November 8 they arrived at Heavy D's Beverly Hills home after a call was made to report an unconscious man. When the cops arrived, they found the rapper conscious, though he had difficulty breathing. The self-proclaimed Overweight Lover was then transported to Cedars Sinai Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead. TMZ also reported that a flight that Heavy took back from Europe after performing at a Michael Jackson tribute concert in Wales may have been a factor in his death as well. It is believed that the blood clots formed in Heavy's legs due to his prolonged immobility on the long flight.

Heavy was laid to rest on November 18. The night before his funeral, his brother Floyd Myers spoke with MTV News about his brother's health from his family's home, apparently unaware of Heavy's heart disease. "Heavy was in great shape," Myers said. "You guys seen him at the BET Awards, and he just did the tribute to Michael Jackson; they flew him out to London to do that. Heav was in good shape, healthy, no heart problems. He constantly made sure that his health was in check."

At the time, the initial autopsy report had come back inconclusive and Heavy's family, friends and fans were still searching for answers. Still, rather than speculate, Heav's brother remembered the positivity that the rapper exhibited in his life. "He loved family, and that's who he was, but it wasn't too much different from how he treated his friends and his fans," he said. "He showed everybody love and affection, and we're gonna miss that."

Menuism: All About Belgians: A Guide to Belgian Beer Styles

By David Jensen, Craft Beer Expert for Menuism.com
Belgian Beer Styles
Photo: David Jensen

"In Belgium, there are no styles," proclaims Peter Bouckaert, Brewmaster of New Belgium Brewing. This statement exemplifies the individuality, non-conformity and creativity of Belgian brewers. Notwithstanding their individualism, Belgian brewers have strong ties to their history and tradition of brewing. What does all this mean to the Belgian beer drinker? It's simple: you can have two beers that are technically the same style, and feature some similar attributes, but taste quite different. In this way, Belgian brewers have had a strong influence on brewers around the world, especially on the craft beer movement in America.

Despite the non-conformity of Belgian brewers and American brewers of Belgian-style beers, this style of beer does feature common attributes across different types. These categorizations are important because they create a language that brewers use to communicate with consumers what they're about to drink. This guide introduces some of the most popular types of Belgian-style beers, and what you can expect from each type.

Common Features of Belgian-Style Beers

It's important to establish that a few aspects of Belgian-style beer are common to most--but not all--beer styles. First are phenol aromas, which are produced by the yeast and are desirable primarily in Belgian styles and weizens. Phenols produce aromas that are usually described as clove-like, spicy, herbal, and, to some, bubblegum. In sour beer, the phenols express themselves more like farmyard or medicinal-type aromas, which, again, are desired qualities. Next are the fruity esters, also originating from the yeast, which create an aroma of banana or fresh citrus. Finally, many Belgian beers are bottle-conditioned, or re-fermented in the bottle, to such an extent that when you pour the beer, there may be an almost champagne-like effervescence. Despite these general commonalities, you can easily come across a Belgian-style beer with none of these qualities. That's what makes exploring Belgian beer so great.

Holy Ale

When you think of Belgian beer, does that conjure up images of monks brewing beer? The fact of the matter is that there are only six breweries in Belgium, and one in the Netherlands, that make beer brewed by monks. These are the Trappist breweries.

Trappist Ale

Trappist ales are not actually a style of beer but rather a designation of who made the beer--in this case, Trappist monks. The designation "Trappist" on a beer label guarantees the following: the beer was produced at the monastery, monks manage the brewery and production, and the profits benefit the community and social services. The seven Trappist breweries are: Westmalle, Chimay, Koningshoeven, Rochefort, Orval, Achel and Westvleteren.

Abbey Ale

Abbey beer or ales are not a style of beer and abbey ales are not brewed by monks. The term "abbey" is simply a marketing tool designed to sell the beer. For instance, Witkap features a monk on the bottle but it is neither brewed by nor for an abbey. Since 1999, however, there are a few breweries that have made special license arrangements with particular churches to brew beer in their name with a portion of the proceeds going back to the church or abbey. These are called "Recognized Belgian Abbey Beers" and are usually labeled as such.

So what's the main difference between Trappist beer and Recognized Abbey beer? Trappist is a specific order of monks--the Cistercian Order of the Strict Observance--who brew the beer themselves. Abbey beer is made by commercial brewers.

Belgian Ales

White

Belgian-style white beers are more commonly known as witbier or bi?re blanche. This style nearly went into extinction in the 1950s when the last white beer-producing brewery closed its doors. Luckily Pierre Celis, who worked at a white beer-making brewery as a young man, started a new brewery in the 1960s to revive this style of beer.

This beer is referred to as "white" due to its appearance, which is unfiltered, hazy and very pale. Witbiers are brewed with as much as 40 percent wheat and commonly with spices such as coriander and orange peel, which impart a spicy and citrus aroma. The wheat in many witbiers is actually unmalted, as opposed to German-style wheat beers, which use malted wheat. This gives it a grainier aroma. The flavor has a moderate sweetness, nearly unnoticeable bitterness, and some brewers will use a brewing technique to add a touch of tartness, which enhances the citrus notes and makes it quite refreshing. The alcohol by volume is moderate at 4.5% to 5.5%.

White Belgian Beers to Try: Caracole Troublette, Celis White, Allagash White, Avery White Rascal, Hitachino Nest White.

Saison

Saison means "season" in French. Saison, the beer, originally became popular in farmhouse breweries of Wallonia, the French-speaking region of Belgium. The beer was brewed and stockpiled in the cooler months, then used to refresh seasonal migrant workers during the summer. Brewing saison also gave famers something to do during the non-growing seasons while providing spent-grain feed that could then be used to feed livestock.

Saison is difficult to categorize as a style of beer. There are as many differences between individual saisons as there are similarities, if not more. In general, many saisons are light in color, but a few are dark, and still others are somewhere in between. The opacity ranges from hazy to somewhat clear. The aroma is dominated by the fruity esters, with aromas of banana or lemons and oranges. The spicy clove or pepper aroma from the phenols may or may not be present. The hop aroma in saisons is usually spicy and herbal. The flavor of the hops can be moderately spicy and bitter or more assertive. Saisons can be a little tart but (ideally) not so much that it overwhelms the other flavors. Although saisons aren't sweet, some may have a small amount malt flavor to balance the other flavors. Like the aroma, the flavor may exhibit fruity, citrus notes, black pepper and sometimes the taste of added spices. Alcohol by volume ranges from low (4.5%) to high (8.5%), but shouldn't result in a boozy aroma or taste. Saison exemplifies both the Belgian brewers' dedication to tradition as well as their non-conformity of style specifications. Each brewer seems to have his own interpretation of what a farmhouse saison may have tasted like.

Saison Beers to Try: Saison Dupont, Saison Silly, Ommegang Hennepin, or almost anything with "saison" in the name.

Dubbel

Dubbel is a style that has been brewed by monks and secular breweries for centuries. The name is said to have originated from the style requiring twice the grain as a "regular" beer, but that doesn't say much about the style beyond the fact that it is a strong beer. The red-to-dark brown color of dubbels comes from the use of dark candi sugar rather than dark roasted malts. The candi sugar imparts aromas and flavors of burnt sugar, raisins, or chocolate-caramel. Notes of herbs, plums, bananas, apples, spice, black pepper, and other earthy qualities can also be found in a dubbel. Despite a dry finish, the flavor of a dubbel generally has a malty sweetness due to the relatively low amount of hops used. The best dubbels are bottle-conditioned, giving the beer a strong amount of carbonation. The alcohol by volume is on the higher side, typically ranging from 6% to 7.5% but shouldn't be very detectable in the flavor or aromas.

Dubbel Beers to Try: Westmalle Dubbel, Chimay Red, Maredsous 8, Westvleteren 8, New Belgium Abbey, and Allagash Double.

Note: To help remember the difference between dubbel and tripel, just use this simple mnemonic device: dubbel is dark.

Tripel

Similar to dubbel, tripel (aka trippel) is said to get its name from requiring three times the amount of grain as a typical beer. This style has been brewed in Belgium since 1932, but was popularized by Westmalle Brewery in 1956. Tripel is deep yellow to golden in color with a frothy white head that usually leaves lacing on the glass. The aroma can be spicy, floral, perfumy and fruity with notes of orange or banana. The flavor can be lightly sweet with a light malt flavor. The combination of fruity aromas and flavors, coupled with the low-to-moderate hop bitterness, can make this beer seem a bit more malty-sweet than it technically is. The hop flavor is low to moderate and is expressed with a spicy or herbal quality. Despite having an alcohol by volume of 7% to 10%, a good tripel should not be boozy or solvent. Again, despite the high gravity of this beer, it should be medium-to-light-bodied, which the brewer achieves by adding sugar to the brew kettle.

Trippel Beers to Try: Westmalle Tripel, Chimay White, Tripel Karmeliet, Witkap Pater Tripel, Van Steenberge Piraat, Unibroue La Fin du Monde and Victory Golden Monkey.

Strong Blond Ale

The strong blond ale was developed by Moortgat brewery, the makers of Duvel, after World War II, in order to compete with pilsners. A Belgian-style strong blond ale very closely resembles a tripel but the flavor is less grainy, less sweet, and a touch more bitter. The color ranges from bright yellow to golden, which is generally lighter than a tripel. The finish is also drier than a tripel but just as highly carbonated and sometimes more so. Strong blond ales are often hoppier than tripels. The hop aroma can be floral, perfumy and herbal, due to the European hops used in the brewing process. Just like tripels, this style is also fruity and spicy. The alcohol by volume ranges from 7.5% to 10%, which is more noticeable but doesn't distract from the flavors of the beer and isn't solvent-like.

A "regular" blond ale or a Belgian pale can be generalized as a weaker version of the strong blond ale.

Strong Blond Ales to Try: Duvel, La Chouffe Achouffe, Dupont Moinette, Delerium Tremens, Russian River Damnation, and Avery Salvation.

Strong Dark Ale

A Belgian strong blond ale may be a close cousin to a tripel but a Belgian strong dark ale is not closely related to a dubbel. One important distinction is that the strong dark ale often uses roasted malt, which achieves a darker color and more toasty flavor than a dubbel. The color of strong dark ale ranges from deep amber to dark brown with a dense foamy head. The aroma may be described as rich, sweet, toasted, bready, caramel-like, peppery, herbal, with dark fruit notes like prunes, raisins, plums or figs. The flavor profile is similar to the aroma and is moderately sweet and malty with a low-to-moderate amount of bitterness, which provides balance and sometimes a spicy quality. Despite the complexity of flavors and aromas, a good Belgian strong dark ale will meld all of these attributes harmoniously. This style is very strong with an alcohol by volume of 8% to 11%.

Strong Dark Ales to Try: Westvleteren 12, St. Bernardus Abt. 12, Chimay Blue, Lost Abbey Judgment Day, and Russian River Salvation.

Sour Ales

A discussion of sour and wild ales could be a distinct discussion unto itself, so this will be a very brief primer. Sour ales and other beers made using wild fermentation techniques can be difficult to categorize, but these are two categories that you can start with.

Flanders Red and Brown Ale

The Flanders red and brown ales can most easily be summed up as complex, sweet, and sour, with a long history. Both of these styles are historically aged in wooden barrels for an extended period of time, which can add to the complexity of the beer. These beers range from deep red to brown with good clarity and a pale head. The aroma may contain any or all of the following: oak, dark fruit, black cherries, currants, dates, chocolate, vanilla, toffee or caramel. The sour aroma of the beer ranges from sour citrus to a sweet balsamic vinegar. The flavor is a nice blend of sweet and sour with many of the fruity aromas also making an appearance. Hints of spicy flavors may also be detected. This style of beer has very little hop bitterness and no perceived hop flavors. Alcohol by volume ranges from 4% to 8%.

There are two main differences between Flanders red and brown ales. The brown ale has a deeper color and more of a caramel and nutty flavor. The red ale has more of a barnyard or cheese rind aroma from the Brettanomyces (aka Brett) yeast. Flanders brown ales are less common and are also known as oud bruin.

Flanders Red Ales to Try: Rodenbach Grand Cru, Duchesse de Bourgogne, Monk's Caf? Flanders Red Ale.

Flanders Brown Ales to Try: Liefman's Oud Bruin.

Lambic and Gueuze

Lambic is a spontaneously fermented beer made from un-malted wheat, malted barley and aged hops. It's literally left out in large, open vats to collect the wild yeast in the air. Lambic is usually brewed in the cooler months, much in the tradition of farmhouse brewing, but in this case the cooler weather is to ensure that only the desired wild yeast ferments the beer. After fermentation, lambic can be aged in barrels anywhere from six months to five years. Lambic is not blended.

The base color of lambic is pale to golden yellow. The aroma is quite acidic, with earthy notes of barnyard, hay, horse blanket, musk, attic dust or cheese rind. It may also express qualities of the oak barrels. Young examples are tart and sour but older versions have a much better balance of sour and malty characteristics. Flavors can vary greatly but may include apple, citrus or honey. Lambics have little to no hop bitterness or flavor. Furthermore, the hops in lambic styles function mostly for anti-bacterial purposes rather than flavor.

Gueuze, also known as oud geueze, is blended using lambics that have been aged in oak barrels for one, two and three years. The brewmaster determines which levels are required to produce the ideal product. The flavors and aromas are similar to lambic but are more balanced and refined.

Fruit lambic is similar to gueuze in that it is blended. The fruit is generally added halfway through the aging process. The lambic will take on many of the characteristics of the fruit that was added. The younger the lambic, the sweeter and more prominent the fruit will be. The longer it is aged, however, the more the lambic flavors will be expressed. A word of caution: some beer labeled fruit lambic actually isn't true lambic--some brewers use flavored syrup instead of real fruit. Be cautious about what you're trying.

Note: The terms "lambic" and "gueuze" also usually indicate that the beer came from Belgium.

Examples to Try:

Unblended lambic: Cantillon Grand Cru Bruocsella.

Fruit lambic: Boon Oude Kriek, Cantillon Kriek, Cantillon Rose de Gambrinus, Cantillon St. Lamvinus, Hanssens Oude Kriek.

Other Belgian styles include quadrupel, which is even stronger than dubbels and tripels; amber ale, which is somewhere between a blond and a brown; and winter, seasonal or Christmas beers, which are usually strong and brewed with spices.

Although Belgian brewers have greatly influenced brewers around the world, American, English and Scottish brewers in particular have also influenced Belgian brewers. This is definitely apparent with the variety of other styles brewed by Belgian brewers. For instance, the Belgian-style IPA--a style that usually includes a healthy dose of American hops, like Amarillo, which imparts aggressive hop aroma and bitterness that complements traditional Belgian ingredients and flavors. Other styles include Belgian-style stout and Belgian-style Scotch ale.

Beyond these, there are many other Belgian beer styles that are less well defined, and which fit in between, outside, and all around the aforementioned more popular styles.

97% The Artist

To call The Artist stylish is an understatement. The film beautifully appropriates the vocabulary of the silent era. When a crowd applauds wildly in one scene, we hear nothing. In another when George raises his hands to his head and looks up to the sky to scream, the sound is deafening in its silence. In its place, we have a lush (mostly) instrumental soundtrack married with the gorgeous contrast of black and white film. The visual cues of light and dark shadows are that much more crucial because there is no sound to inform the narrative. The Artist is sincerely a loving re-creation of the silent period. Not as the works exist today, but as we imagine them to be. The appropriation is truthfully a lot better than what remains from the actual movies of that time. There are no missing frames or deteriorated quality. The actors' movements are fluid, not jumpy or rushed. Intertitles are used, but only sparingly allowing the viewer to connect with the actors through reading their lips and gestures. The acting feels more natural and informed by the current age. Yes the performers must rely on facial expressions and body language to indicate emotion, but the execution is restrained. We're spared the artificial, melodramatic faces that mar productions of that time period. This is the silent era as re-imagined with technological panache. The mood is luxurious and nostalgic. Breathtaking is an overused word, but it fits. The Artist is marked by a poetic beauty. How can you not love a film that is (virtually) silent yet speaks volumes? Although The Jazz Singer was released in 1927 and is recognized as the first commercially successful talking picture, the majority of movies released were still silent for the next two years. It wasn't until 1929 that the format eventually took off. Ernst Lubitsch's The Patriot was the last silent to be nominated for Best Picture in 1929. That will change this year. It takes chutzpah to make a silent movie in 2011. The fact that it's so darn good, is just an additional benefit. As a period piece, it brilliantly captures the early age of sound, but the plot also presents a searing emotional drama about ego and the transitory nature of fame. In a word, it's stunning and reminiscent of classics like Singing in the Rain and Sunset Boulevard in terms of themes addressed. I dare say this ranks favorably when compared alongside side those jewels of the silver screen. The Artist is a film for the ages.

New non-GMO 'super' broccoli contains extra cancer-fighting nutrients, but less vital sulfur

(NaturalNews) British scientists have developed a new variety of broccoli that contains up to three times more of a powerful heart-health nutrient than conventional varieties -- and they did so without the use of genetic modification (GM). However, the "super" broccoli, known as "Beneforte," also contains less vital sulfur than conventional varieties.

By cross-breeding traditional British broccoli with wild, bitter Sicilian broccoli, researchers from the Institute for Food Research and the John Innes Centre, both in Norwich, England, were able to produce the Beneforte variety, which contains up to three times the normal amount of glucoraphanin (GRP).

GRP is a precursor to sulforaphane (SF), which is the actual nutrient responsible for providing anticancer, anti-diabetic, and antimicrobial benefits. GRP in its standalone form provides little, if any, health benefits, and must come into contact with myrosinase (MYR), another enzyme naturally present in broccoli, in order to become metabolized into beneficial SF.

The Beneforte scientists, however, claim the extra GRP in their broccoli helps to improve the breakdown down of fat in the body, and prevent it from building up in arteries and causing heart disease. They also say that eating Beneforte helps to reduce cholesterol levels, and are currently conducting human studies to verify these claims.

"There's a lot of circumstantial evidence that points to (glucoraphanin and related compounds) as the most important preventive agents for (heart attacks) and certain cancers," Lars Ove Dragsted, a professor at the University of Copenhagen's department of human nutrition, is quoted as saying by USA Today

Since it is not GM, Beneforte is unlikely to have any negative side effects. After all, many non-GM fruits and vegetables sold in stores today are hybridized. However, unless there is extra MYR in Beneforte along with the extra GRP, it is unclear whether this so-called "super" variety of broccoli is any more beneficial to health than standard varieties.

Beneforte was introduced in the UK last month, and has been available in select stores in California and Texas for roughly the past year. And within the next couple of weeks, it is set to be introduced in stores across the US.

Fox Sports Wins Court Ruling; Dodgers Can't Sell TV Rights -- Yet

This time around Fox Sports beat the Los Angles Dodgers in court.?

U.S. District Court judge Leonard Stark ruled on Friday to grant Fox a stay of a previous ruling in U.S. Bankruptcy Court that permitted the Dodgers to auction off their TV rights.

Stark said the court was likely to conclude that there was at least one "erroneous" finding in the previous ruling.?

The Dodgers had sought to auction the rights to maximize the value of the team, which owner Frank McCourt has promised to sell by April 30.

Fox immediately rejected that decision, claiming it violated it's contract with the team. The existing contract gives Fox exclusive negotiating rights through Nov. 30, 2012.

Also Read:?L.A. Dodgers Score Big Win in Court

The bankruptcy court permitted the Dodgers to sell the rights given the impending sale of the team, saying the exclusivity of the rights did not apply with the team in bankruptcy.

Stark dismissed that notion, ruling that the auctioning of the rights would not determine whether the team emerges from bankruptcy or the sale.

He will hear Fox's appeal Jan. 12.

Colombia: Jose Lopez Montero, 'Caracho,' Turns Self In

BOGOTA, Colombia -- The boss of a Colombian crime ring has turned himself in to authorities along with more than 280 members of his armed group.

Jose Lopez Montero, alias "Caracho", surrendered on Friday, authorities said. A total of 283 other members of his group also turned themselves in on Thursday and Friday, prosecutor Nestor Armando Novoa said.

They belong to a group called the Popular Anticommunist Revolutionary Army. Despite its name, the group does not have a clear political stance as the country's right-wing militias have in the past. Its members are accused of drug trafficking and killings.

The reasons for their mass surrender were unclear.

Lopez had told Colombian news media recently that he is "tired of the war." He faces charges including conspiracy, and could face additional charges as the head of the armed group, Novoa said.

Lopez, 40, took over as the group's leader after his predecessor was killed by security forces in December 2010. The former boss, Pedro Guerrero, alias "Cuchillo" or "Knife," was previously the leader of a right-wing militia group that had broken up.

Lopez and others turned themselves in to authorities in the city of Villavicencio, about 75 kilometers (45 miles) southeast of Bogota.

It was one of the largest mass surrenders of criminal suspects in Colombia in recent years. The country's authorities have not said if they initial discussions with the group to work out any terms of their surrender.

Novoa said more than 300 prosecutors, investigators and social workers were identifying the men and going over their cases. He said that all who are wanted for crimes will face charges.

Kindle Fire software update now available

By Rosa Golijan

Amazon

Good news if you own a Kindle Fire: Amazon has issued a software update for the device.?It'll take a bit of time to download and install, but it's worth it thanks to a pile of performance and bug fixes.

According to Amazon, you can either grab the update manually or directly over-the-air. No matter which option you choose though, make sure your device is fully charged before going through the update process. (Oh, and don't forget about making sure you're connected to Wi-Fi if updating over-the-air, of course.)

If you prefer to grab the software update ??which is version 6.2.1, by the way ??over-the-air, you just need to reach for your Kindle Fire, tap the "Quick Settings" icon in the upper right corner, press "Sync" and wait. The update will be automatically downloaded in the background and installed afterwards (while the device is asleep).

The manual approach to the update is a bit messier, but Amazon's got detailed instructions to get you through the process.?All you're basically doing is downloading the new software to your computer and then transferring it to your device. (Keep in mind that the micro-USB cable you'll need to do this is sold separately from the Kindle Fire, but is conveniently the same cable that comes with most non-iPhones these days.)

Once you're done updating your device?? whether manually or over-the-air?? you should be left with?enhanced fluidity and performance, improved touch navigation responsiveness, the option to choose which items are displayed on your Kindle Fire's carousel, and the ability to add a password lock on Wi-Fi access.

Sony denies Vita plagued by screen issues, claims apology was lost in translation

PS Vista
Sony is a little hot under the collar after a recent wave of stories regarding some bugs that allegedly beguiled the first wave of PS Vita owners. As you may recall, reports were pouring in that many customers were experiencing freeze ups and other performance issues with their new handhelds, prompting Sony to issue an apology. Well, it seems as if something got lost in translation. A UK spokesperson for the company told the Guardian that the statement was actually apologizing to customers experiencing difficulty getting through to tech support, not for the screen issues that have been the subject of many a YouTube video. He went on to say that Sony has seen no evidence of widespread problems with the portable gaming device, though, there was firmware update made immediately available to address some bugs.

Growing Up Geek: Steven Troughton-Smith

Welcome to Growing Up Geek, an ongoing feature where we take a look back at our youth and tell stories of growing up to be the nerds that we are. Today, we have a special guest: programmer, app designer, artist and geek, Steven Troughton-Smith.
I was born to be an artist. I was always the kind of kid that doodled when bored in class; I used to spend hours creating the most intricate symmetrical robots or plotting maps for world domination. Somewhere along the way I realized that the thing I really wanted to design was software, and I'd really have to learn to start programming to be able to make what I saw in my head exist.

As a child of four I was exposed for the first time to a computer -- a Macintosh IIsi. When I wasn't playing SimCity 2000 or Spelunx, I was dabbling in Photoshop 3.0. I was fascinated by the Mac and would spend hours learning all the intricacies of how it worked. I discovered an Amstrad 286 in our attic at some stage -- my mom's old work computer -- and set to work trying to figure out the arcane incantations to show something more interesting than a DOS prompt onscreen. (Eventually I found some Windows 2.03 floppy disks about the house and forcibly upgraded it -- it wasn't much better off for my efforts). Then, in 1998, I met RealBASIC.

'Marilyn' actor Branagh parallels his character (AP)

New York ? Long before Kenneth Branagh stepped into the role of Sir Laurence Olivier in "My Week With Marilyn," there already were strong parallels between them.

Both are synonymous with film adaptations of William Shakespeare, delivering lines with implausible realism, and earning accolades for their troubles. Each starred and directed their own successful adaptations of "Hamlet," and "Henry V," that earned Oscar nods for their work on both sides of the camera. (Olivier received an honorary award that included directing the film).

With such similarities, it seems fitting that Branagh earned a Golden Globe nomination for his performance as the legendary actor.

"He was a master of his craft, and at the same time very vulnerable," Branagh says of Olivier.

"My Week with Marilyn," is in theaters and stars two-time Oscar nominee Michelle Williams as Marilyn Monroe. It's based on the writings of Colin Clark, who spent a week with the iconic actress in 1957 while she was filming "The Prince and the Showgirl" in the United Kingdom.

"When they were making this film, Olivier, saw it as means to reinvigorate his career, especially in the states," Branagh said. "But he found it a challenge to work with Marilyn (Monroe), whom he considered less than professional."

Olivier eventually lightened up to Monroe, admitting she was wonderful in the film.

But Branagh says his co-star, Michelle Williams, who plays the iconic Monroe, has been wonderful from the start.

"Before we ever started filming, she learned everything she could about Marilyn, and played her flawlessly."

"After some time you live the character, and stop playing it," he added.

Olivier was 50 when he starred and directed "The Prince and the Showgirl," and Branagh was 50 when he portrayed Olivier in the film.

"He had this attitude of, `It's not over, yet,' and I feel the same way," Branagh said.

The actor always has held Olivier in high regard and is humbled whenever critics draw comparisons. That comes as no surprise when you consider Olivier's body of work. Classic performances include Heathcliff in "Wuthering Heights," the title characters in "Othello" and "Richard II," and Andrew Wyke from "Sleuth."

"How could you not be an Olivier fan? Just think of that scene in Marathon Man, where he's torturing Dustin Hoffman with a dentist's drill. That scene alone could be responsible for a generation of British not going to the dentist," Branagh said before breaking into laughter.

So while he's a serious actor, Branagh also has a good sense of humor. And he's going to need it at the Golden Globes, where Ricky Gervais returns as host.

Branagh and Gervais grew up in the same English town of Reading; Branagh moved there as a child from Belfast. Branagh is a year older than Gervais and says their schools often played football games against one another. Branagh was an avid footballer through school.

"I'm not sure if he ever played," the actor said of Gervais. "But if he did, we certainly played against one another."

Because of the hometown connection, Branagh expects Gervais to focus some the jokes about growing up in Reading. And the actor says he has no problem with that.

Editor ousted over racial slur against Rihanna (AP)

AMSTERDAM ? The editor of a Dutch fashion magazine has been fired after the publication used a racial slur to refer to Barbados-born Rihanna, setting off a social media furor and prompting an outraged response from the singer.

Eva Hoeke, editor of "Jackie," and the magazine's publisher said in a joint statement on Facebook that the misuse of a racial slur ? "although without malicious intentions" ? was cause for Hoeke's departure after eight years on the job.

The slur was used in an article about how to dress your daughter like a pop star. Responding to criticism that flashed across the ocean, Hoeke said at first that her use of the term was meant as a joke.

She then put out a Twitter item with a more explicit apology, saying she learned, "1. Don't publish bad jokes in the magazine 2. Don't pretend bad jokes to be funny. Sorry guys. My bad."

On Tuesday, Rihanna responded herself via Twitter: "Your magazine is a poor representation of the evolution of human rights! I find you disrespectful, and rather desperate!!"

Rather than a positive article useful to Dutch girls, Rihanna said Jackie chose to print an item "degrading to an entire race. That's your contribution to this world!" She also ended her tweet with an indelicate phrase.

Hoeke said she was unaware the word she used was so loaded because "you hear it all the time on radio and TV."

By Wednesday, the Facebook apology had attracted hundreds of comments, many condemning Hoeke but some saying the reaction was overblown.

American Cancer Society Joins 'Million Moms Challenge' to Tackle ...

(3BL Media / theCSRfeed) ATLANTA, GA -? December 19, 2011?- Although largely preventable through early detection, cervical cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among women in developing countries, where more than 85 percent of the estimated 529,800 cervical cancer cases worldwide in 2008 occurred.?While cervical cancer screening rates have decreased by as much as 65 percent over the past four decades due to screening, incidence rates remain high in developing countries in Central and South America, the Caribbean, sub-Saharan Africa, and Southern Asia where girls and women do not have access to prevention services such as education, HPV vaccination and life-saving pre-cancer screening and early treatment.?

The American Cancer Society has joined ABC News and the United Nations Foundation in the recently launched Million Moms Challenge (www.millionmomschallenge.com ), an initiative aimed at connecting millions of American women with millions of moms in developing countries and raising awareness of maternal issues such as pregnancy, childbirth, children's health and moms' health worldwide. As the world's leading voluntary health organization, the American Cancer Society lends its expertise and resources to the Million Moms Challenge to raise awareness about cervical cancer, a leading cause of death among women worldwide and a disease that affects maternal health, especially in developing countries.??

Brawley, M.D., the American Cancer Society's chief medical officer.?"The American Cancer Society is proud to join the Million Moms Challenge in raising global awareness of cervical cancer and providing opportunities to save lives and reduce suffering from this highly curable and preventable disease."?

The American Cancer Society recommends cervical cancer screening for women 18 and over approximately three years after a woman begins having vaginal intercourse, but no later than 21 years of age. Screening should be done every year with conventional Pap tests or every two years using liquid-based Pap tests. At or after age 30, women who have had three normal test results in a row may get screened every two to three years.

The American Cancer Society is a member of Cervical Cancer Action, a coalition of organizations and individuals dedicated to eliminating cervical cancer deaths worldwide by raising global awareness and advancing a global call to action to address cervical cancer.?For more information on the American Cancer Society's global efforts and how to join the movement, visit www.global.cancer.org???

The story behind John Cena's salute

Every night before he enters the ring, John Cena, clad in camouflage shorts, stands at attention and salutes as though a commanding officer were standing in front of him barking orders. Most think that Cena is simply acknowledging his devoted fans, which the leader of the Cenation will not deny.

?It?s a salute of loyalty to those that stand by me, that have been doing it for years,? Cena explained to WWE.com.

However, for the 10-time WWE Champion, there is also a much deeper meaning behind his gestures.

?Every night when I do that salute, it?s also a sign of respect to the men and women that don the uniform of the Armed Forces,? he declared.

John Cena holds the Armed Forces in the highest esteem and has implemented many aspects of the military way into his attitude. It goes beyond camo shorts and a salute.

?When it came my time to slowly redefine who I was from wrestler to hip hop thug, to the next step in my career, I basically took the ideologies of discipline from the Armed Forces,? Cena said. ?I took honor, code and country and came up with hustle, loyalty and respect. I think exactly like they do.?

The leader of the Cenation also has one very personal ritual related to the Armed Forces. Those who pay close attention to Cena right before a match begins will see him remove a pair of dog tags from around his neck and kiss them before handing them to the referee or ringside attendant for safe keeping. But the Superstar prefers to keep the meaning behind the tags to himself.

?That?s secret information that I?ve told a few Make-A-Wish families and those people who need to know. [WWE.com] doesn?t need to know,? Cena lightheartedly explained.

As evidenced by his passionate speech at Fort Bragg during Tribute to the Troops, John Cena is extremely reverent toward the men and women of the United States Armed Forces and will continue to do whatever he can to honor their ultimate sacrifice.

Taylor's "National Velvet" script sells for $170,500 (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Elizabeth Taylor's script for the movie "National Velvet" -- which made her a star at age 12 -- sold for more than 50 times its estimate on Friday as the New York auction of the actress's jewels, clothes, art and memorabilia neared its close.

Christie's auctioneers said the 1944 "National Velvet" script, bound in lilac leather, was sold to a private U.S. buyer for $170,500 on Friday. It's pre-sale estimate was $2,000 - $3,000.

A drawing of lips inscribed to Taylor by Andy Warhol sold for $242,500, and was among the priciest items bought on the fourth day of the auction.

Friday's total sales were $4.4 million, including commission, taking the auction sales so far this week to $154.2 million. An online-only sale of some 1,000 lower-priced items from Taylor's estate continues through Saturday.

Christie's chairman Marc Porter said the response to the auction so far had been "nothing short of overwhelming with multiple bidders competing for every lot."

Taylor, regarded as one of the last great Hollywood legends, died of congestive heart failure in March at age 79.

Her fabled collection of ruby, diamond and emerald jewelry -- many of them gifts from two-time husband Richard Burton -- attracted the biggest interest, selling for a total of $116 million earlier this week.

Paris museum snaps up Bronte manuscript for $1.1 million (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? A French museum paid 691,000 pounds ($1.1 million) on Thursday for a miniature manuscript written by Charlotte Bronte, ending hopes it would return to the British author's former home that is now a museum.

The 1830 booklet, which fits comfortably into the palm of a hand, had been expected to fetch 200-300,000 pounds, and the final price was an auction record for a manuscript by any of the Bronte sisters.

After what Sotheby's described as a "tense bidding battle," the manuscript was bought by La Musee des Lettres et Manuscrits in Paris, where it will be exhibited in January.

The news came as a blow to the Bronte Parsonage Museum in the famous literary family's former home in northern England which had launched an appeal to buy the artifact.

The museum already owns four of the six tiny booklets, and one remains untraced.

"This is unquestionably the most significant Bronte manuscript to come to light in decades and an important part of our broader literary heritage," said Andrew McCarthy, director of the Bronte Parsonage Museum.

"It belongs in Haworth and we are bitterly disappointed that scholars and members of the public may now not have the opportunity to study and enjoy it as part of our public collection."

The museum had secured a grant of just over 613,000 pounds to secure lot no. 46 from the National Heritage Memorial Fund, a fund of "last resort" to keep key treasures in the country, but it proved insufficient.

WOMAN IN THE ATTIC

The booklet by the author of the 19th century classic "Jane Eyre" contains more than 4,000 words in miniature letters on 19 pages, which measure less than 1.5 by 2.5 inches.

Bronte wrote the manuscript when she was 14 and living with her family at Haworth in Yorkshire, and it was one of six hand-written "Young Men's Magazines" she created at that time.

The magazine is set in the fantasy world of "Glass Town," the earliest of the fictional worlds created by the four Bronte siblings that included Charlotte's younger sister Emily who went on to write "Wuthering Heights."

Sotheby's, which auctioned the mini-magazine as part of its English literature sale in London, called it "the most important Bronte manuscript to have appeared at public auction in more than 30 years."

"This tiny manuscript represents (Bronte's) first burst of creativity and provides a rare and intimate insight into one of history's great literary minds," said Philip Errington, Sotheby's specialist in the books and manuscripts department.

The magazine includes a passage describing a character's madness which appears to be a precursor to the famous scene in Jane Eyre when Mr. Rochester's insane wife, kept in the attic, seeks revenge by setting fire to the bed-curtains.

Overall the auction raised 1.7 million pounds including buyer's premium, compared with pre-sale expectations of 1.1-1.6 million pounds not including the premium.
